Lives and works in London.
Jade Connolly's artistic exploration centers on the intricacies of interior space, with a particular emphasis on the passages, chambers, and transitional areas within domestic dwellings. Her oeuvre delves into the psychological dimensions of these spaces, elucidating the significance imbued within various rooms and transitional spaces. Employing a diverse array of mark-making techniques, Connolly explores a range that spans from delicate shallow fields of intense colour to flat opaque gestural brushstrokes.
Her latest series, predominantly rendered in a palette of saturated and subdued tones of blue, green, and yellow, draws inspiration from the architectural configurations of her childhood home. Within these canvases, Connolly captures the dichotomous emotional states of tranquility juxtaposed with anxiety, reflective of her lived experiences.
Complementing her painted works, Connolly engages in rapid yet expressive studies of interiors utilising ink and watercolor mediums, further accentuating her familiarity with her chosen milieu. Central to her practice is the symbiotic relationship between artist and subject, with particular emphasis placed on the pivotal role assumed by the viewer. In the absence of detail, spectators are compelled to engage actively with the artwork, projecting their interpretations onto past and anticipated narratives.
Through her portrayal of vacant interiors, Connolly imbues her compositions with a cinematic quality, adeptly harnessing the interplay of light and shadow to evoke a profound sense of isolation. This cinematic aspect enhances the viewer's experience, heightening their role as both witness and observer within the realms she constructs.
